Every year thousands of young people leave the church – but many of them are turning their backs not on God, but on something else. Care for the Family’s Getting Your Kids Through Church Without Them Ending Up Hating God tours offer the opportunity to consider what we can do about this. What is it that we can change in our homes, our churches and our hearts that will make it less likely that a generation will be lost to the church?
In May and June our team took to the road again with the summer tour, covering many miles from Croydon in the south to Colwyn Bay in North Wales and Edinburgh in the north. Not even the Irish Sea proved a barrier as we ran events in Enniskillen in Northern Ireland and on the Isle of Man.
Over 2,000 people in total attended the events and benefitted from Rob Parsons’ wisdom. Topics he covered included issues such as trying to fit our kids into a Christian ‘jelly-mould’, the big killers of faith, and the three big disappointments kids face as they grow in their Christian faith. Gavin Calver spoke powerfully from a youth leader perspective and Abi Williams framed the event in worship.
Guests were encouraged to write the names of their children on the palm of a paper hand as a reminder for prayer. As the event ended, Rob Parsons prayed collectively for all those whose names had been written down.
The locations changed each night, but all the events had one thing in common – an encouraging, responsive and supportive audience. Many who attended went away telling us how much the event had challenged them.
